Roberto Carlos Likely To Reunite With Ronaldo At Corinthians
Fenerbahce defender Roberto Carlos revealed to the press that he would like
to play for Santos, the team which his father supported, or for Corinthians,
where his close friend Ronaldo plays.
Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo shared the same dressing room in three World Cups
with Brazil, those of 1998, 2002 and 2006. The free-kick specialist admitted
that the "Libertadores factor" could make him decide for the team from the
capital. Corinthians gained direct entry for the tournament in 2010 after
winning the Copa do Brasil earlier in the year.
"I spoke to Ronaldo in Araras; he asked me if I wanted to play for
Corinthians and I said yes. It messes with the head of any player [Corinthians].
I don't know what the expectations are, to be the champions [of the Copa
Libertadores] is the dream of all of the 'Corintianos', especially in our
centenary year," he explained.
Roberto Carlos stated that even if he is identified with crosstown rivals
Palmeiras, after having played for them before emigrating to Europe, he
would be honoured to play for Corinthians.
"It would be a great honour because they are a big club, with a huge fan
base. I'm used to playing for teams like this and I won't have any problems
adapting myself."
When told that Corinthians boss Mano Menezes is looking for an experienced
left-back to celebrate the club's centenary year, Roberto Carlos said: "He
said that? It is nice to know."
The Brazilian confirmed that only after his existing Fenerbahce contract
expires will he return to his homeland.
