Reacting in a calm manner to the rumors of Friday's coaching change
within the Corinthians soccer team, head coach Mano Menezes remains
focused on this year's goal.
The president of the soccer club, Andres Sanchez has allegedly began
negotiations with Palmeiras head coach, Vanderlei Luxemburgo, with hopes
of bringing him in to lead the team in 2010.
Next year will also mark the centennial anniversary of the team's
existence. Menezes claims to be ignoring rumors.
Confident that this year's campaign will keep him on board at
Corinthians, Menezes said "I have learned in soccer that you need to
develop selective hearing. I only listen to things that I think are
important. If I hear anything negative, I tend to ignore it."
Menezes did comment on the rumor stating that it may disrupt the team's
focus in the final stretch of the Sao Paulo state soccer championship.
Having already guaranteed their spot it the semifinals of this year's
tournament, the team simply awaits to learn who their rival will be.
Sao Paulo has already secured their spot in the semis, along with
Palmeiras. One more team is yet to qualify before the semifinal schedule
will be announced.
"We know what is being thrown in front of us in a time like this. We are
determined to keep our heads in the game and not let any remote news
influence our behavior. Based on my experience, we are doing just fine
and have not let this rumor get in our way," said Menezes.
Hired towards the end of 2007, Menezes has a valid contract with
Corinthians until the end of the 2009 season. Talks between the coach
and the club's administration have signaled towards a contract extension
through their centennial year.
Most of the current players on the team have contracts that extend
According to the team's director of soccer, Mario Gobbi, Mano is the
coach that all the athletes trust and who they want to play for.
The season is still young and many things are possible. A slip in
Corinthians' performance could facilitate the entrance of Luxemburgo
next year. However, a solid performance in 2009 may guarantee Menezes'
place on the team.
