Former Real Madrid vice-president Emilio
Butragueño has admitted that sacking Vicente Del Bosque as coach was a bad
decision and also criticised the club for allowing Ronaldo to leave.
Four year after making the decision that has been a
talking point ever since, the man that helped make the decision to axe the coach
has revealed his true feelings.
Del Bosque was sacked the day after the club won the league title in 2003 with
rumours suggesting that the move was instigated purely because Florentino
Pérez's administration wanted the right-lloking man for the job.
During his four years in charge at the Bernabéu, the trainer won the Champions
League twice, two Spanish championships, the Spanish Super Cup, the European
Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.
Despite that record he was given the boot in favour of Manchester United's
second-in-command, Carlos Queiroz, and the club have gone onto to endure three
season without any trophies.
"One of the biggest mistake's of that era was to removbe Del Bosque," Butragueño
told Spanish television.
"We had a discusion that turned out to be wrong. He was an exceptional person.
It may have been that if he had stayed things would have been very different.
"The decision was taken and it is a fact that under Queiroz the team played very
well until the final two months of the season."
After reflecting on his time as part of the presidential regime at Madrid, the
club's former striker took a swipe at the current administration for one of
their key decisions.
"It was a mistake to sell Ronaldo," he continued. "He is one of the best players
in the world.
"The fact is that he can win a game on his own. He is one of the few strikers
that you can give the ball to anywhere on the pitch and he is capable of scoring.
Butragueño was instrumental in implementing Florentino Pérez's Galácticos policy,
that started brightly but then became a weight around the club's neck.
"The results were not good," he stated, before adding his view on the current
Madrid team.
"I think that the side is failing to shine and struggles to win every game." |
