A weight off his mind as Ronaldo confounds the doubters

Brazil's Ronaldo confounded his many doubters with a predatory double against Japan which leaves him a goal away from becoming the top World Cup goalscorer of all time.

A neat header and a fine curling shot on the turn dispelled any notion that the 29-year-old Real Madrid striker has had his day - and perhaps a few too many culinary indulgences - as his contribution in the 4-1 win in Dortmund took him to 14 World Cup goals, level with German "bomber" Gerd Muller.

"I have been very patient. You have to keep working and not lose heart," said the superstar, who added that the support of his family "has carried me through the bad times," including another injury-ravaged season.

"I came to the finals in a much worse physical condition than my teammates (but) I feel better and better," he enthused after moving past Pele's Brazilian record of 12 World Cup goals to delight coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.

"Ronaldo is getting better and better. He is a very special player," Parreira beamed, while Pele congratulated Ronaldo on his achievement.

"That will have been a weight off his shoulders," said Pele.

The 'Phenomenon' had cut an almost pitiful figure in arriving in Germany after an injury-ravaged season with Real, where he has not won anything since a 2003 league title, that success pre-dating the David Beckham era at the Bernabeu.

His lack of match fitness was compounded by a visible battle to keep his weight under control.

The whole topic became a matter of state a fortnight ago when Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva enquiring about the star's fitness before they opened their World Cup campaign with two unimpressive narrow wins over Croatia and Australia in which Ronaldo did very little.

Ronaldo responded angrily to Lula's doubtless well-meaning intervention in the affair by observing pithily: "Just as he says I'm fat, everybody knows he drinks too much."

But amid speculation the star might be dropped, Parreira insisted that the man the German media has nicknamed Pummelnaldo (roly poly) needed matches under his belt.

"He needs to get his rhythm - he's not ready for 90 minutes," Parreira insisted as he retained his man and left Adriano, set up by Ronaldo for a goal against Australia, on the bench against the Japanese.

The day Ronaldo answered his critics with a blazing performance, which harked back to the glory days of 2002, had begun with the resolving of a great Brazilian mystery long shrouded in secret, as the Selecao's physical trainer Moraci Sant'anna revealed the forward weighs in at 90.5 kilos (198 pounds).

Sant'anna told Globo News TV that Ronaldo had hit 95 kilos but "now he is close to his ideal weight."

He insisted that Ronaldo had "lost 3.2 kilos from the day he arrived (in Germany) through to the Australia match, then one more."

On the Real Madrid official website, he is listed as a decidedly middleweight 82 kilos.

Parreira said last week that Ronaldo "is not the youngster he was in 1994."

That year, Parreira, whose coaching brought Brazil their fourth world title in the United States, elected not to use the then teenage forward who came along just for the ride.

In 2002, despite a catalogue of knee problems with Inter Milan which robbed him of two seasons of his career while at his peak, Ronaldo had a similar questionmark against him going into the finals.

His response was an eight-goal haul, capped by a brace in the final win over Germany - though FIFA credited him with two goals against Costa Rica after one strike initially went down as an own goal.

At club level since those heady days things have not been plain sailing and Ronaldo admitted mid-season he had never felt truly at home in Madrid, suggesting the fans have never taken him to their hearts.

That tenuous love affair may yet hit the rocks - but with Brazil the romance has been rekindled with a vengeance.
