Persistent pressure just a part of being Ronaldo

As usual, Luiz Nazario de Lima is at the epicenter of a storm, buffeted by forces from all sides yet somehow maintaining an edgy calm and smiling into the din his presence has generated.

But rather than fighting for a sliver of space in a turbulent goalmouth or facing a battery of cameras and microphones at another tempestuous news conference, he's surrounded by more than 200 children drawn by his appearance to dedicate a new soccer field in a Latino community only a few miles from the Staples Center.

These kids know of Shaq and Kobe, but they idolize the Brazilian goal-scorer better known as Ronaldo, who at 28 is nearing a critical juncture of a career punctuated by giddy zeniths and grim depths.

For the leading scorer in the last World Cup and current employee of Real Madrid, one of the most famous and successful club teams in the long history of the sport, demands are his constant companions. Three times he has been named the best player in the world. He has set for himself an almost impossible standard of performance.

"The most difficult people to please are Brazilians and the fans of Real Madrid," Ronaldo says in an exclusive interview with USA TODAY after the Nike-sponsored event. "They are used to championships and scoring goals."

The phenomenon

Since he first left Brazil to embark on a pro career in the Netherlands as a 16-year-old, Ronaldo has scored goals and helped his teams win titles. In the meager-scoring sport of soccer, no attribute is more highly prized nor more scathingly criticized than goal-scoring, and so prolific has he been for club and country he has been dubbed IlFenomeno: The Phenomenon.

"You have to get physical and up close on him so he can't turn you. If he's facing you, he can do anything he wants," former U.S. defender Marcelo Balboa says. "I prefer to see the back of his jersey, because if I see the Real Madrid logo on the front, I'm thinking, 'Oh, my God, what am I going to do?' "

Ronaldo led all scorers in the 2002 World Cup by netting eight goals as Brazil won its fifth global crown. That same summer he joined Real Madrid, and in the last three seasons he has rung up 68 goals, mirroring his only previous season in Spain (1996-97), during which he drilled an astonishing 34 goals in 37 games for Real's bitter rival Barcelona. His first season in Holland, he scored 30 goals in 33 games for PSV Eindhoven.

"The pressure is always large," he says before Real beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-0 in an exhibition later that night. Ronaldo didn't play.

"But I have 13 years playing for Brazil's national teams and many years playing in Europe. It is not because I am good looking or ugly but because I have shown my skills. I score many goals. It is not easy that way, or any way. Anytime I am not doing well, someone can come in and take my spot."

Despite leading all scorers in the South American region with nine goals during the qualifying campaign for the 2006 World Cup, his spot is in dispute heading into the next qualifier, to be held Sept. 3 or 4, at home vs. Chile. Two younger stars, Adriano and Robinho, have emerged. When Ronaldo asked coach Carlos Alberto Parreira to be excused from the Confederations Cup tournament in June, the coach complied - and also dropped him from the roster for qualifiers against Paraguay and Argentina.

Last week, controversy flared anew. Ronaldo refuted international news media reports he'd announced his retirement from the national team, effective after the 2006 World Cup. He also has heard that Real will sell him this summer to Inter Milan, for whom he played from 1997 to 2002, with Adriano joining Real in the exchange.

"I am indifferent to it," he said of the speculation with Real, which opens its Spanish league season Aug. 28 and its Champions League season in mid-September.

"I keep doing what I am doing, and I want to be the best. I always wanted to win titles, score goals and for people to enjoy my style of play. I can't always convince everyone, but I do want to convince many people."

Winning is everything

There are some people convinced that his powerful dribbles and thundering shots are no more than memories despite the 21 goals he scored for Real last season. Dogged by excess weight for much of the season, a nutritionist devised a program for him to shed 12 pounds and regain his speed without sacrificing the strength by which he fends off tacklers and powers through their challenges.

Real's failure to win any trophies the last two seasons has its fans and the media scouring for scapegoats. And despite the certainty that Brazil will qualify for the 2006 World Cup and won the Confederations Cup last month, a 3-1 loss to Argentina in Buenos Aires on June 8 refueled the purveyors of blame.

Ronaldo has been waylaid by misfortune before. He collapsed and was rushed to a hospital just hours before the 1998 World Cup final; he played nevertheless and Brazil was beaten 3-0 by France. He missed most of three seasons in Italy after rupturing ligaments in his right knee twice before reviving his fortunes with Real.

His personal life is highlighted by a succession of ballyhooed romances before and after a marriage to Milene Domingues ended in divorce.

He has four more years on his contract with Real and says one day he'd like to play in Major League Soccer. That possibility seems remote because he earns $25.3 million in salary and endorsements a year, according to figures released by France Football.

Still, he has enjoyed America since 1994, when he came to the USA as a member of the Brazilian team that won the World Cup. He also would like to emulate Pele, whose arrival in 1975 to play for the New York Cosmos transformed the sport in America as nothing else has done before or since.

"I have very fond memories of '94, even though I didn't play a minute," he says. "I've come here a couple of times on vacation. (Los Angeles) is a beautiful city. I have stayed in Santa Monica and Malibu, and I enjoy the beaches. Last year I was in New York and stayed for two weeks.

"I never saw Pele play. When he arrived here, it was a huge part of the sport growing here in the United States. That's what I want to contribute."
