Preview: Portugal-Greece

It’s not the final many had expected, but Sunday’s match between Portugal and Greece will crown a new, and somewhat un-fancied, European Champion.

But just because no one expected these two sides to be in the final, it does not mean that they do not deserve to be here as Portugal and Greece have knocked off the best sides in Europe and fully deserve all the accolades they are currently receiving.

Both sides are making their first appearance in the final of a major tournament, but that certainly won’t affect their ambition as these two nations clearly have their eyes on the prize and neither will want to settle for second place.

Portugal manager Luiz Felipe Scolari is calling Sunday’s encounter "the most important game in his life.”

While manager Otto Rehhagel is content to assume the underdog role, he is hoping to take Greece to unprecedented footballing success.

Team News:

Portugal:
Scolari is set to stick with out-of-form striker Pedro Pauleta in attack. The PSG hitman has had a dismal tournament but will get one more chance to completely redeem himself. This move effectively ends speculation that Nuno Gomes would be in Portugal’s starting eleven.

Rui Costa has announced that Sunday’s final will be his last match for Portugal. Nonetheless, he is likely to start this match on the bench as Scolari is expected to give Deco the nod once again in the playmakers’ role.

Scolari is expected to field the same squad that defeated Holland 2-1 in the semi-finals.

Greece:
The Greeks will try to stifle Portugal’s attack, by placing two defenders on Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Figo whenever they have the ball.

They will also try and crowd the midfield to make sure Deco and Maniche don’t get room and leave striker Angelos Charisteas alone in attack.

Greece has a healthy squad but will miss midfielder Giorgos Karagounis as he is suspended for this match. Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis and opposition leader George Papandreou will both attend the final along with several other public officials, some of whom, such as Sports Minister Giorgos Orfanos and Chief Athens 2004 Olympics organizer Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, are already in Portugal where they attended Thursday’s game.

Previous Encounters:

Portugal has a slight edge over Greece in this rivalry. But the Portuguese have failed to beat Greece in their two most recent meetings.

Players To Watch:

Portugal: Cristiano Ronaldo did not start in the opening match of the tournament and is hoping to bring his side some better fortune in this match. He certainly has the pace to get past Greek full backs Fyssas and Seitaridis. If he is able to get in quality crosses, then it could be a long night for Greece.

Greece: Angelos Charisteas will be relied upon to produce the offence for Greece in this match. If Greece score a goal, he will have likely had something to do with it.
