Porto have entered the knockout stages of the Champions League after a 2-1 win
against Partizan Belgrade. In the other match in the group Real Madrid beat
Marseille 2-1.
Porto dominated the opening stages of the game but didn't create many chances.
However in the 25th minute McCarthy tapped in the Portugese sides first goal
after a low drive from Maniche which was saved by Pantic. The Porto pressure had
payed off even though this was their first real clear cut chance.
Delibasic came close to scoring for the visitors but they went into half time
1-0 down. In the 50th minute McCarthy scored his second again with a tap in
after a poor back pass from Savic which went beyond the goalkeeper Pantic and
McCarthy was on hand to score Porto's second.
The game settled down for most of the second half and Porto looked to
consolidate their win and place in the knockout stages. Delibasic scored a late
goal for Belgrade in the 90th minute but it was too little too late.
Real Madrid won 2-1 in Marseille with goals from Beckham and Ronaldo. It was a
patchy performance from Madrid although they did deserve to come away with all
three points.
The first goal was a brilliant free kick from David Beckham curled into the top
corner of the net in the 35th minute. It was Beckham's first Champions League
goal for Madrid.
Marseille put on a spirited performance after Madrid scored and it looked as if
the Spanish team has taken their foot off the gas to some extent. They were
punished when Hossam headed in an equaliser in the 63rd minute. It was a
deserved goal for the French team.
In the 73rd minute Ronaldo finished off a wonderful move by Madrid to tap in the
winner from a Raul cross.
Madrid stay top with 13 points whilst Porto are second with 10 points. Marseille
and Partizan have 3 and 2 points respectively.
