World Player of the Year 2003 for Ronaldo, Henry or Zidane
ZURICH, Nov 27 (SW) – The identity of FIFA World Player of the Year 2003 is yet
to be known, but FIFA have revealed it will be Real Madrid’s Ronaldo, his
teammate Zinedine Zidane or Arsenal’s Thierry Henry.
Last
year’s gala had seen Ronaldo elected with 387 points, with a margin of more than
200 points over runner-up Oliver Kahn (171 points) from Bayern Munich, while
Zinedine Zidane had finished third with 148 points.
This year, 142 coaches of men’s national teams have cast their vote, selecting
their three favourite players, each vote giving the first named player 5 points,
3 points to the second, and 1 point to the third nominated player.
Luiz
Nazario de Lima, aka Ronaldo, Zidane and Henry have all had outstanding
performances during the year.
The Brazilian ace was on target last night in Madrid’s Champions League game
against Marseille, when he got the winning goal in the 73rd minute, while his
teammate Zidane got the winner for Real in their last domestic game against
Albacete.
On Tuesday night, Thierry Henry was also outstanding, with two goals and two
assists against Inter Milan during Arsenal’s Champions League game away to San
Siro.
The winner of this year’s award will be announced during FIFA World Player Gala
in Basle, on December 15th.
